RABAT – Tagipedia is a free online Arabic encyclopedia that Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-ORG) aims to launch by the end of this year.
Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, is a Palestinian businessman residing in Jordan and he is also the owner of the education and professional services firm Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org).
Abu-Ghazelah told Reuters news agency that Tagipedia aims to rebuild a knowledgeable Arab society, which is correct and accurate. Moreover, Tagipedia wants to make a contribution to the development of the Arab world at the economic, social and scientific levels.
The latest UNESCO statistics affirm there are 422 million native speakers of Arabic language, and 1.5 Muslims who use it all over the world. Yet, only 1.7% of websites include Arabic language.
Ghazaleh considers the percentage of websites using Arabic language as modest and does not give a proper representation of Arabic heritage and culture.
While Wikipedia allows users to create and modify its content, Ghazaleh affirmed that before publishing any entry from Tagipedia it will have to be examined and verified to ensure it’s accuracy, usefulness, correctness and to be sure it is not offensive or harmful.
TAG-Org started working on this project more than a year and a half ago and Ghazaleh said that Tagipedia costs have exceeded $10 million.
While Wikipedia hosts 235,000 articles in Arabic, Tagipedia expects to have 1 million entries by launch.
