Sidi Ifni- Arifa Bibi, a young Pakistani mother of two, was stoned to death by a Pakistani tribal court for owning a cell phone. The mother died in the presence of her family members, who too threw stones at her.
For the simple reason that she possessed a mobile phone, the woman was killed and buried away from her home village, Opposing Views reported.
According to some reports, her family was not allowed to attend the funeral.
Pakistan is notorious for stoning, a barbarous and inhumane form of punishment. Women’s rights groups warned against stoning women.
“Stoning is used against women in particular as a way to control them,” Naureen Shameem, representative for women’s rights group was quoted by Opposing Views as saying.
UN reports show that Pakistani women are discriminated against, particularly in regards to sexuality and basic freedoms.
“Stoning is one of the most brutal forms of violence perpetrated against women in order to control and punish their sexuality and basic freedoms,” Shameem noted.
Currently, Women Living Under Muslim Laws Group are calling on the United Nations to intervene to put an end to stoning Pakistani women, especially that the punishment has recently grown rampant in Pakistan.
