Rabat- A potential increase in the prices of bread might turn into a harsh reality for millions of Moroccans, when the National Federation of the Owners of Bakeries meets on Wednesday in Casablanca to discuss the recent escalation in production costs and the attitude of indifference expressed by the head of Government towards the sector’s problems.
Bread is an essential component on every Moroccan table. It is so important that Moroccans consider it as vital as the oxygen they breathe and any increase in its price will have serious ramifications on social security.
The looming increase in bread prices will be added to the series of other augmentations in prices of basic goods and services since the Governmental coalition led by the Islamist party of PJD took office in 2011.
Moroccans are huge consumers of bread. Bread is not only the staple food for numerous Moroccan families, but it is widely served with nearly all meals in Morocco.
The production is said to be something around 195 million bread units every year, according to Al Massae newspaper.
A group of people interviewed by MWN said that the increase in bread prices is a red line the Government should not dare to cross.
“We can accept the increase in everything except the prices of bread”, a teachers from Rabat told MWN.
