CAIRO– In the recording, al-Sisi allegedly urges that intellectuals draft an article so he remains defense minister if he is not elected president
A source has described as “fabrication” an audiotape attributed to Egypt’s Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in which he calls for “constitutional immunity” for himself if he is not elected president.
“A complaint will be lodged with the Prosecutor-General against media outlets that attribute the recording to al-Sisi,” the source was quoted as saying by the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper.
The Rassd News Network on Thursday published an audio recording attributed to al-Sisi in which he called for providing constitutional immunity for himself if he is not elected Egypt’s president.
“You should lead a campaign with intellectuals to draft an article in the constitution to provide immunity to Gen. al-Sisi in his capacity as a defense minister and allow him to resume his role if he is not elected president,” al-Sisi reportedly says during an interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper.
But Yasser Rezq, the editor-in-chief of Al-Masry Al-Youm, has described the audio tape as “fabrication” and accused the Muslim Brotherhood of being behind the recording.
In an interview with the privately-owned daily, al-Sisi has left the door open for a possible bid for the presidency.
Al-Sisi, who is the army chief, ousted elected president Mohamed Morsi on July 3 following massive, well-coordinated protests against his presidency.
The unconstitutional change of government is described by the ousted president’s backers as a military coup, while supporters of the move call it a military-backed “popular uprising.”
