Bordeaux- A Moroccan father got in trouble with Spanish authorities over allegedly mistreating his daughter because she refused to wear a veil, according to the Diario de Mallorca.
The scene took place in Palma, on the Balearic Island of Mallorca in Spain. A 46 year old man was arrested for allegedly abusing his 15 year old daughter after the girl’s school contacted the authorities.
Last May, the school’s headmaster noticed bruises and wounds on the girl’s legs and arms. After questioning her, he concluded that her father had been hitting her with a belt because she wouldn’t wear a hijab, according to the same source.
The father was immediately taken into custody by the Spanish police and confessed he had punished her but only because of her bad grades. He also admitted he had hit her once because she was ignoring her baby brother’s crying while their mother was out shopping. He swore it was a one-time mistake due to the nervousness caused by financial difficulties.
When the mother was asked to witness, she supported her husband, saying the couple had never forced their daughter to wear a veil. She made it clear the family thinks it is a personal decision and a voluntary act.
The father was later released, after the Spanish social services investigated the couple and found the family lived according to “Moroccan tradition” and weren’t radical islamists.
The hijab is a hot topic in Spanish schools. In 2011, a Moroccan teenager was expelled from her school for wearing it, forcing her parents to bring her back to Morocco.
