Agadir, Morocco- Not a lot of words can make their way as a replacement to "Cry" in "No Woman, No Cry", and still rhyme, please and make for an awesome satire. The word "Drive" managed to!
Agadir, Morocco- Not a lot of words can make their way as a replacement to “Cry” in “No Woman, No Cry”, and still rhyme, please and make for an awesome satire. The word “Drive” managed to!
The satirical YouTube video “No Woman, No Drive” by Saudi comedian Hesham Fageeh, in collaboration with Fahad Al-Butari, protests the ban on women driving.
Many Saudi women have posted videos of themselves “illegally” driving on the social media networks, but none of them received the staggering views Fageeh’s video collected in a record time, almost 7 million views in less than three days!
Both comedians are optimistic that the ban will be lifted at some point in the future, but also emphasized that the focus of their work is entertainment, not advancing political agendas.
I wouldn’t blame the comedians for choosing to steer away from politics. A contributing factor in the video popularity could likely be the media buzz following the arrest of 14 Saudi women for “illegal driving” has also brought more global attention to the issue.
The creators’ aims aside, just a few seconds through the video, and we can easily perceive that the video is a piece of gold.
When genius, advocacy and technology meet, we get gems! Enjoy!
