Rabat- Mourad El Heraq Benay, a second year student in the Master’s Degree program in Computer Science at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) Martil-Tétouan, committed suicide a few days ago. From a poor family in the city of Leksar Lekbir, Mourad relied on a scholarship to attend the school. However, for some reason his scholarship was revoked and was excluded from the campus.
Mourad was born in 1990 and was a hard working student. He received his baccalaureate with good grades, and a certificate as a higher Technician of the preparatory classes in Computer Science with good grades as well. He then joined the school of teachers, affiliated with the University of Abdul-Malik al-Saadi, where he earned a professional degree in Web development. This enabled him to access the Master classes within the same institution, where he was studying pedagogical engineering and multimedia. He was in the second year before his death.
Though Mourad did not dedicate all his time to technical study, he read literary books, and was also an activist in the Feb. 20th Movement.
According to the Moroccan authorities, Mourad jumped from the terrace of the “Mixta” building in Tetouan. The authorities have speculated that his suicide was in reaction to his financial crisis. However, there is another theory that rejects the notion of suicide and suggests he was murdered.
Mourad’s last status on Facebook mentioned more than once the word “murder” and he accused certain parties of plotting to kill him. He wrote also that he had obtained some important information about Morocco-Israel-France relations, and that was why “they” wanted to kill him. His brother claimed that Mourad did not throw himself off the building, but was dropped by four men from the roof of the building.
Mourad’s friends have staged vigils in Martil city, asking the authorities to find out the truth. They said they do not believe that Mourad committed suicide.
