El Jaddida - Early birds had the chance to witness what had happened, blessed are they or cursed to live such a nerve-racking experience, is it doomsday they might have thought, has the Egyptian prophecy been fulfilled then or has the oracle misread Morocco’s palm?
El Jaddida – Early birds had the chance to witness what had happened, blessed are they or cursed to live such a nerve-racking experience, is it doomsday they might have thought, has the Egyptian prophecy been fulfilled then or has the oracle misread Morocco’s palm?
It seems that 2014 has come rough- deep freeze in the west, heavy rains in the east and tsunami-like waves came for the first time to pay a visit to Morocco last Monday, causing materialistic damages as well as psychological ones.
On social websites, many people attributed such a natural disaster to corruption that has prevailed in our country; claiming that this is a nature stirring alarm to people to wake up from their deep hibernation.
The same places that were hit by the waves are frequented daily by couples seeking some private romantic moments together far from city noise and to enjoy the scenery as well as freedom. At sunset, you can hardly find an empty spot, couples of all ages and of all types gather there. What if the waves had come during sunset? How many unfortunate couples overlooked by police authorities would have been stoned by enraged waves? Lots of promises would have been broken and lots of lies would have been revealed.
The same places where drunks and thugs gather to divide their share of robbed merchandise were washed away by salty waves. Owners of cafés and restaurants couldn’t bribe the enraged waves not to wash away their illegal spread terraces.
Enraged waves decided to voice their anger and dissatisfaction on behalf of 32.52 million Moroccans towards the sky-rocking prices, the scarce job opportunities, the oppressed poor, the marginalized homeless and elderly, the ghost-employees, the unfulfilled promises, the over-crowded schools and hospitals… Waves of change have struck shores of corruption in an attempt to rectify the social and economic deformities.
Deformities the government tries to rectify but fails every time, due to corrupt people who do not have a sense of patriotism, people who demolish what the government tries to build, and people who leave projects incomplete after draining their financial budgets. For those people had the bell tolled, for those people had the waves come.
