Taroudante, Morocco- According to AFP, Morocco has begun construction of a new fence with blades on the top near the border of the Moroccan occupied city of Melilla “in an effort to dissuade would-be migrants from crossing into Europe”.
In statements to the Spanish news agency EFE, Chekib el-Khayari, head of the Rif Association for Human Rights, ensures that the Moroccan project is underway.
The human right activist told the Spanish agency that the construction of the fence began there nearly twenty days ago in Rostro Gordo area outside the territory of the municipality of Ferkhana.
“According to elements gathered by our association, these barriers will be five meters high and will be topped with blades,” said the activist, as reported by AFP.
Adil Akid, an activist from the Moroccan Human Rights Association, told AFP that “ditch-digging work had begun on the Moroccan side of the border with the intention of building a wall.”
According to the Spanish agency, the Moroccan authorities have not commented so far on this matter.
Hundreds of Sub-Saharan migrants are still perched on the side of Morocco’s Mount Gourougou, in the Moroccan city of Nador, waiting for an opportunity to enter the EU by climbing the border fence of Melilla.
