Rabat- After Hamid Chabat (Secretary General of the opposing party Istiqlal) accused the head of Moroccan government, Abdelilah Benkirane, of having an alleged relationship with the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIS), Benkirane admitted to having no more than one tie with ISIS.
Daily Alyaoum24 quoted a source close to the head of the government declaring Benkirane has admitted to having ties with ISIS. “In response to Hamid Chabat’s questions, Benkirane said that he and ISIS share just one thing in common.” Benkirane is quoted to have said that “the only thing linking me to ISIS is the beard, though mine is significantly shorter.”
According to the same source, Benkirane went on to add that “I have been working in the Moroccan religious field for 40 years and I have continually strived to bar any ISIS-like group [referring to the extremist Islamic movements] to grow in this moderate field.”
These comments refer to Hamid Chabat’s accusations on Monday, asking the Secretary General of the ruling Justice and Development party, Abdellah Benkirane, to reveal the nature of his party’s ties with ISIS to the public.
The Secretary General of the Istiqlal party, Hamid Chabat has always doubted Benkirane’s loyalty to Morocco, claiming that rather than having the having the interests of Morocco and the Moroccan people at heart, Benkirane is more loyal to the Muslim Brotherhood.
