Rabat – Morocco’s active support to the United Arab Emirates’ fight against terrorism, in line with royal instructions, is a solidarity initiative towards a brother country, said on Wednesday Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Salaheddine Mezouar.
“Morocco was itself listed as a target country by terrorist organizations. Its domestic vigilance plan as well as its solidarity-based action towards a brother and friend country, the UAE, are part of the Kingdom’s active contribution to the fight against terrorism at its sources and hotbeds from where it attempts to expand,” Mezouar pointed out during a joint press conference with Interior Minister, Mohamed Hassad, and Communication Minister, Spokesperson of the government, Mustapha El Khalfi.
The head of the Moroccan diplomat insisted, however, that this support will not be part of the international coalition against ISIS. “Morocco’s active support to UAE, which is a voluntary act towards a brother country with which Morocco has strong strategic relations and bonds of brotherhood, is not part of the international coalition against ISIS but rather part of bilateral cooperation,” Mezouar added.
This action comes to reinforce long-standing security and military cooperation with Gulf countries, particularly the UAE, which was given new impetus in 2011 after the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between Morocco and several member-countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the minister explained.
According to the minister, “Morocco will define the nature of the support it will provide as part of this action, which followed several coordination meetings, and will be conducted under the UAE’s command.” “A coordination process is underway with several other Gulf countries,” he went on to say, adding that “Morocco is ready to shoulder its responsibility and provide necessary support to the brother and friend countries.”
Terrorist threats are global and Morocco’s actions are part of a preventive strategy that proved successful, Mezouar said, recalling the new domestic security mechanism “HADAR” launched recently to fight threats facing the Kingdom.
Morocco, the minister added, has taken part in several military operations in a bilateral framework to defend national security and territorial integrity of brother and friend countries, including in Congo, the Golan Heights, Zaire (now DRC) and Saudi Arabia in 1990 following the invasion of Kuwait, in addition to its reputed international humanitarian operations and peacekeeping commitments.
Tuesday, a statement of the ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said this action, which is part of the tradition of successful partnership and strong solidarity between the two brotherly countries, reinforces a historic and multifaceted military and security cooperation with Gulf States. It supports and complements other measures taken on the Moroccan territory to preserve the security and safety of Moroccan citizens against the threat of international terrorism, the statement added.
