London – The UK market is strategic for the tourism sector in Morocco which seeks to make tourism a lever for social and economic development, director general of the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) Abderrafie Zouiten said.
Speaking to MAP on the sidelines of the World Travel Market, the world’s largest event for travel industry (London Nov. 3-6), the Moroccan official stressed the importance of the UK market for the Moroccan tourism industry, noting that in 2013 Morocco was for the first time the UK’s top African destination, ahead of other Anglophone destinations such as Egypt and South Africa.
As of August 2014, the number of British tourists who visited Morocco grew by 17 %, while the overall number of UK tourists in the world increased by only 5 %, he noted, underlining Morocco’s ambition to attract one million British tourists by 2018.
To achieve this “realistic and attainable” goal, ONMT has developed an integrated strategy consisting of specific actions and a promotional campaign aimed at meeting British tourists expectations and encouraging them to visit Morocco, Zouiten concluded.
