Tunis – The lack of regional integration in the Maghreb costs the region’s countries 2 to 3% of their GDP, president of the Moroccan economists association Mustapha El Ktiri said on Monday in Tunis.
Speaking at a meeting on the Maghreban integration and the European Union, El Ktiri deplored that the Maghreban countries lose 3 to 9 billion dollars as a result of the current stalemate in the Maghreb Union.
The volume of trade between the countries of the region does not exceed 3%, one of the world’s lowest rates in terms of intra-regional trade, he said, ascribing such a predicament to the absence of economic complimentarity.
