Speaking at the fifty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW59), Hakkaoui gave an overview of the reforms undertaken by Morocco to combat all sorts of gender-based discrimination.
In this respect, she pointed out to an array of legal reforms that enabled the introduction of a family code in 2004 and a nationality code in 2007.
She also shed light on the provisions of the new constitution which include the creation of several institutions tasked with the protection and promotion of human rights including the parity authority to fight all sorts of discrimination.
On the government’s efforts to further promote gender equality, Hakkaoui cited the setting up of follow up and assessment mechanisms including the national observatory for fighting violence against women and the national observatory for improving women’s image in the media.
In the field of education, Hakkaoui pointed to an increase in that 99.1 of girls are attending primary schools for the academic year 2012-2013 of which 97.7% are in rural areas.
At the political level, women representatively in the parliament increased from 10% in 2002 to 17% in 2011.
