Rabat – Health Minister El Houssaine Louardi called, on Monday in Rabat, for opening a “wise and serene” debate on abortion taking into account the religious, legal, medical, social, ethical and cultural dimensions.
Speaking at a conference on the amendment of the abortion law held by the Moroccan association for the fight against illegal abortion, the Minister said that the success of the debate depends on the adoption by all the parties of a flexible position so as to find common grounds that may lead to a lasting solution to this issue.
In this respect, Louardi stressed that resolving the abortion issue requires the involvement of several government departments and civil society organizations.
He said that the Health Ministry is in the process of elaborating a comprehensive action plan that takes into account the different stands regarding the issue.
Louardi explained that the plan stresses the importance of allowing abortion to protect the physical and mental health of the mother in cases of rape, incest, congenital malformation, adding that this will have positive impact on reducing maternal mortality and ensure safety conditions in abortion.
The doctors are also designed to benefit from the action plan in the sense that they can practice their profession in transparency.
