Rabat – King Mohammed VI is expected to make an official visit to Mauritania as part of an African tour that will also take him to other western African countries, reported daily newspaper Akhbar Al Yaoum quoting sources from the Mauritanian government.
The monarch’s expected visit to Mauritania is seen as an attempt to revive bilateral relations that have faded since the arrival of President Mohamed Abdel Aziz to power in Mauritania by a military coup.
Relations between Rabat and Nouakchott, once a model of its kind in the region, keep deteriorating. Mauritania has not appointed an ambassador to Morocco in years, while Morocco has not changed its ambassador to Mauritania despite objections from the political establishment in Nouakchott.
Besides Mauritania, the regional tour, whose specific dates have not yet been disclosed, aims to amplify Morocco’s influence in Africa through the signing of bilateral agreements, the same source said, adding that the kingdom is seeking to strengthen economic cooperation with western African countries and to fight against terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking and religious extremism.
