The French Army succeeded in freeing Dutch hostage Sjaak Rijke after an operation in the extreme Northern of Mali yesterday.
1224 days after he was kidnapped, on November 25, 2011, in Timbuktu by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the Dutch hostage is finally free.
“Mr.Rijke was evacuated and secured in Tessalit, in the advanced temporary Base of the ‘Barkhane’ operation. He is safe and healthy,” said a satement of the French Ministry of Defense. According to the same statement, “This combat action permitted the capture of several individuals.”
French President François Hollande stated that some jihadists were killed, while others were wounded during the intervention.
The Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his delight after the liberation of the detainee.
Last month, French Minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian, announced the enhancement of the military workforce in the Sahel within the framework of the operation.
