Rabat – The two PJD ministers whose romance has stirred controversy have decided to postpone their wedding plans until they leave office.
According to sources quoted by news website Media24, Habib Choubani, Minister Delegate in charge of Relations between Parliament and Civil Society and Soumia Benkhaldoun, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Executive training have decided to wait until they leave the government to tie the knot.
Influential leaders within the hierarchy of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), including Secretary General Abdelilah Benkirane and Saadeddine El Othmani, former foreign minister and the chairman of the party’s national council, have reportedly had a discussion with Habib Choubani on Thursday, April 23rd, asking him to solve the problem created by the announcement of his marriage.
In fact, Abdelilah Benkirane recently expressed his discontent with the romance between Habib Choubani and Soumia Benkhaldoun.
Benkirane said the relationship has tarnished the image of the PJD as it served as a golden opportunity for political rivals to sharply criticize the Islamist party.
The move has stirred controversy both in Morocco and abroad after Minister Habib Choubani (already married), accompanied with his first wife, had asked for the hand of Soumia Benkhaldoun (divorced). Choubani’s mother had reportedly blessed the engagement of the “ministerial couple.”
