Rabat- The Masjid Maryam Islamic Center in Debary, Florida, has started providing medical services for low-income people in the region and those who do not have health insurance regardless of religion.
Following in the footsteps of many Islamic health institutions in the U.S., such as the “Rahma” Clinic in New York, the Red Crescent clinic in Alabama, and the Muslim clinic in Memphis, the medical clinic at the Islamic Center in the Masjid Maryam of Deltona in DeBary, Florida, now offers health services to the poor and to those who do not have medical insurance. The health care center celebrated the opening of its doors to the public on Sunday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a barbecue.
Skilled doctors will provide medical services for a month to patients. In addition to medical checkups, the clinic will also offer lab services and prescription assistance. Health care in the U.S. is costly, and it is very difficult for the poor and even middle class families to access affordable health care.
“We need to give back to the community,” Masjid Maryam’s President, Riaz Quresshi, told the Dayton Beach News Journal. “One of the teachings of Islam is to serve almighty God by serving humanity,” he added. With such initiatives, Muslims are promoting the true image of Islam and demonstrating its principles of generosity, tolerance, and self-sacrifice, and countering the negative image of Islam fostered by terrorists and Islamophobes.
