Taroudant – Douaa Abou Kabouss, a ten-year-old Belgian girl of Moroccan origin, seized the opportunity upon meeting with Secretary General of the UN Ban Ki-moon to read a poem she had written about peace and Islam, as she “learned about it from her parents.”
Upon his arrival, Ban Ki-moon greeted the little girl in Arabic with salam wa aleikoum, and Doua replied Alaikom Assalam, with a happy smile.
The girl, reading her poem, said that terrorism, radicalism and death, which make the headlines in the news, “make me very sad,” contrary to “what they teach me, my mom and dad.”
The girl continued,
“I love my belief, it shows me not to be a thief; it shows me to be reliable, helpful and kind. That’s how Islam is in my mind.”
The little poet concluded her poem with the following moving stanza, calling all people of the world to join together.
I have a dream,
To see the whole world as one team.
If you can accept us as being the same,
Then together we can play a game.
The Secretary General, who had listened attentively, hugged her when she finished reading the poem, saying he was “very moved and touched by the poem.”
