Taroudante – The Al Noor Tower originally slated to be built in Casablanca and said to be the largest tower to be built to date in Africa and Europe, reportedly will now be built in Tangier.
Saudi Arabia’s Tareq Ben Laden Group was reportedly planning to invest $1.5 billion in the construction of a 514-meter tower in downtown Casablanca, which is expected to be the largest in Africa and Europe.
The tower, which will comprise of 114 stories, will host smart offices equipped with the latest technologies. The tower will also include upscale residential complexes, the largest shopping and entertainment center in the African continent, a 7-star luxury hotel and restaurants run by international brands.
Amedee Santalo, designer of the tower and adviser to Sheikh Bin Laden, said that the leaders of the project have decided to halt construction of the project in Casablanca, specifically in the area of Anfa, “for good reason,” according to Médias24.
The reasons include “permitting difficulties, and especially the impact of the tower,” according to Santalo. “They told us that if we build the project in Anfa, it will not develop as we wish. And then there are also the consequences of urban management,” the designer added.
Despite these difficulties, Sheikh Bin Laden and his team are reportedly still willing to invest in projects in Morocco.
As an alternative, “We chose the Tangier free zone because there is space and because it works well. The city of Tangier is growing,” said the designer, commending the welcoming attitude of the authorities of the region, and their “very positive team.”
“The problem we have is that the regulation of the free zone does not correspond to our project,” he said. “We want to get the same status that is available at the Dubai International Financial Center free zone. We will propose that to the Governor soon. The area of Tangier should have a special status while respecting the country’s laws,” recommended Santalo.
