Rabat – A fire destroyed two homes in San Fernando de Henares, Spain on Saturday, injuring two people, including one Moroccan.
The fire was possibly an intentional racist attack against the Moroccan and Peruvian victims, because someone shouted a string of racial slurs during the fire.
Reports indicate that the fire began at 6:00am, when the Moroccan homeowner woke up and noticed that the house next door was on fire, where a Peruvian woman and her father lived.
At this time, an unidentified group of people was heard yelling insults, such as “let the house burn down,” “don’t call the firefighters,” and multiple racist remarks.
Before the firefighters arrived, the Moroccan attempted to put out some of the fire with an extinguisher, resulting in minor burns on his hands, ears, and feet, for which he was later hospitalized and treated.
The neighborhood associations Jarama, Parque Henares, and San Fernando, the local women’s association, and several political organizations rallied in the town square on Sunday at noon to protest the injustice suffered by the victims of the fire.
The City Council condemned the incident and is hopeful that the perpetrators will be found soon.
