London- Saturday May 30 saw the opening of the African Nations Cup 2015 tournament, a unique football competition uniting teams from African communities in the United Kingdom.
Held at West Ham Memorial Grounds in London, 20 countries gathered to participate in this annual event.
Morocco enjoyed a victorious weekend after their 3 wins over Senegal, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe and a draw with Ethiopia secured them a place in the semi-finals.
Morocco’s Consulate General in London, Abderrahim Beyyoudh, who was present that day, said the event was more than just about winning: “the whole idea is to gather people and get in touch and to have fun at the event.”
Infused with traditional music, food, and attire, the day brought together friends and family to celebrate Africa and the much-loved sport—football. The Moroccan band Dakka Marrakchia was also present, spurring on players with the sounds of traditional Moroccan drums.
For many of the players growing up far from their native countries, the tournament is an opportunity to celebrate their identity. Elias of the Moroccan team who grew up in London said: “Playing for Morocco, I feel like I am in touch with my home; the whole atmosphere reminds me of being in Morocco and I feel really proud to be here.”
The next event is due to commence on Saturday June 6 where the Moroccan men’s team will face Burundi in the semi-finals, and the U17’s team will kick off their tournament against Nigeria.
