Rabat – The National Rally of Independents (RNI) denounced the arrest of the two women in Inezgane for wearing mini-skirts and called the behavior of street vendors who harassed them and called the police a form of “terrorism.”
In a communiqué released by the party in solidarity with two young women, Salah Eddine Mezouar, the party’s Secretary General and the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed the RNI’s “concerns about the arrest of the two young women in the city of Inezgane recently, after being assaulted by a number of extremist street vendors for their dress.
The RNI, which is part of the Islamist-led government coalition, said it was “surprised by the behavior of the public forces, which instead of taking legal action against the aggressors, arrested the two girls, victims of the assault, and took them to the police station and then submitted to the General Prosecutor’s Office.”
The party said that this incident is becoming very serious.
The party indicated that “religious extremism –an intruder on our religion and our country- insists on imposing its vision on the lives of citizens, opening the way for those who want to destine themselves as the protectors of morals, and giving them the right to preach and impose their own laws.”
The party called this behavior a form of “terrorism that threatens the freedom and rights enshrined in the constitution.”
The party called for the authorities to respect the personal freedom enshrined in the constitution, hoping that the court will rule in favor of the two girls.
The arrest of the two girls for their dress dubbed “inappropriate and unethical” is garnering international attention. International activists launched a petition, signed by more than 14,000 supporters, who consider the incident “a breach of the principles of living together and the security of citizens.”
