Rabat – Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), an offshoot of Morocco’s domestic intelligence agency (DGST), dismantled, on Thursday, an eight-member terrorist cell involved in recruiting and sending Moroccan fighters to the ranks of the organization of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Interior Ministry said.
The terrorist cell was operating in the cities of Casablanca, Tangier, Salé, Jorf Al Melha and Kelaat Sraghna, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
The members of the dismantled cell were involved in sending dozens of Moroccan fighters to the Middle East through their agents in Turkey via the Turkish-Syrian borders, the same source said.
The arrested individuals showed loyalty to the IS expansionist strategy which aims at attracting Moroccan fighters who will later return to Morocco to perpetrate targeted terrorist attacks undermining security and stability, the statement said.
The suspects will be brought before justice upon completion of investigations under the supervision of the general prosecutor, concluded the statement.
