Miami – On Thursday July 30, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man stabbed 6 people at Jerusalem’s Annual Gay Pride Parade.
According to NBC News, around 5,000 people were celebrating this event, when the man jumped into the crowd from a supermarket, and stabbed participants with a knife. The horrifying images of the attack went viral on social media. Photographers captured every moment before, during and after the stabbings.
The same source reports this parade has always created tension between Israel’s secular majority and the ultra-Orthodox Jewish minority, who condemn homosexuality.
According to the New York Times, the episode was denounced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jerusalem’s Mayor, NirBarkat. Netanyahu declared on his Twitter account, “In Israel, everyone, including the LGBT community, has the right to live in peace, and we will defend that right”.
However, officials were still accused of hypocrisy on social networks. Rebecca Pierce posted on Twitter, “After watching people bleed on the street today, I never want to hear about how Israel is a “haven” for queers ever again. It is an ugly lie”.
The report suggests that the Jewish attacker was identified by the police as YishaiSchlissel, a fundamentalist who committed the same kind of attack at the same event 10 years ago by stabbing 3 marchers. Schlissel had just been released from prison several weeks ago.
Uri Blau, an Israeli journalist, also shared on Twitter a “letter distributed this morning against pride parade was signed by alleged attacker, YishaiSchlissel” The manifesto was a call to violence to prevent the “blasphemous” event.
This hate crime has also caused turmoil in the way the suspect was treated. Some observers went as far as to say that Schlissel got a less aggressive treatment than a Muslim extremist would have gotten.
The Palestinian-American writer and activist Ali Abunimah shared a tweet saying, “Has Jerusalem pride attacker’s West Bank settlement home been demolished yet? Oh wait, that’s only done to collectively punish Palestinians”.
