Miami – Morocco’ King, Mohammed VI, has had enough with the misconduct of certain Moroccan Consuls serving abroad and wants to put an end to this abuse. Last October 31, 2014 about sixty diplomats met in Rabat with the Minister of Foreign Affairs to sign the “Charter of Consuls” in hopes to reconcile Moroccans living abroad (MRE) with the Consulates.
However, during the 16th Throne Day Royal Speech, the King said, “I urge the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Salaheddine Mezoaur, to take firm action and remedy the problematic situation in some Consulates. Those found to be guilty of neglecting their duties, flouting the interests of the Moroccan community abroad or mistreating its members should be dismissed”.
He clearly explained, “There are Consuls – not a majority thank God – who neglect the mission they are entrusted with and focus on personal and political issues”.
The Moroccan community has expressed dissatisfaction “complained about the poor services provided, both in terms of quality and deadline, and about administrative obstacles”.
Minister Mezoaur must act on these requests and make sure Moroccans are “treated with respect and courtesy” as the king desires.
The King was also direct in declaring that “Consuls should be selected carefully, on the basis of competence, responsibility and commitment to serving our citizens abroad”. Yet, he did not clarify if these selections should be made by appointment or election.
The “Charter of Consuls” has not met its expectations of “professional” and “courteous” conduct. The King has called for a review and overhaul of the current “Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad” (CCCME) to establish a Council that meets the aspirations of the Moroccan diaspora.
