Miami – On Tuesday, the province of Modena in Italy witnessed a tragedy. Modena’s Secchia River, in the town of Sassuolo, tragically dragged down three Moroccan-Italian sisters who were bathing. Two of the sisters fatally drowned and the third one was rescued and remains in critical condition.
Despite rescue attempts, the two sisters, Hajar Louhabi, 18 years old, Khadija, only 9 years old – both drowned down the current.
The third sister who was rescued from the Secchia, revived and hospitalized in Modena was the eldest, Khaoula who is 21 years old.
Italy’s ANSA reports that the dramatic scene was witnessed by the youngest of the 4 sisters, who had stayed ashore and was able to call for rescue. Surprisingly, she is only 11 years old.
Italy has been greatly affected by a heat wave in the last month so the 4 sisters had decided to spend their lunchtime cooling off in the river. They did not know that their refreshing mid-day dip, would end up taking 2 lives and forever damaging the family of these 4 Moroccan-Italian sisters.
Authorities have expressed their condolences. Deputy Mayor Maria Savigni visited the sisters’ family and the Sassuolo City Hall published a statement saying, “The deepest dismay and grief for the terrible tragedy that took place along the Secchia River”.
Furthermore, to pay respect and sympathy to the family in their deep mourning, Sassuolo Calcio will postpone their celebration scheduled for August 6th to present the soccer team.
This is an unexpected and sad loss for both Moroccan and Italian communities.
