Rabat – One person was killed and 26 injured in a fire at a juvenile detention center in Sale, near Rabat.
According to media reports, prisoners set the fire at the juvenile Centre for Reform and Education (CRE) in Sale over the weekend which killed one prisoner and left others injured.
Prisoner Khalil Abdelkader, who was serving a six-month sentence for theft charges, succumbed to his burn injuries on Sunday, August 30.
Fifteen prisoners were transported to the Ibn Sina Hospital in the capital Rabat for intensive care.
A large numbers of juvenile prisoners were moved to other prisons as part of precautionary measures after the fire caused damage to the facility.
An investigation into the matter is underway.
