Miami – US President Obama has publicly expressed his support to the Muslim student who was arrested in north Texas for bringing a homemade clock to school that was regarded as ‘suspicious’.
Following the press conference in Texas this morning where Chief of Police Larry Boyd gave an explanation for the teenager’s polemic arrest, President Obama has extended an invitation to Ahmed to visit the White House – with his clock.
Obama’s Twitter account @POTUS released a tweet earlier today addressing Ahmed himself: “Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”
In addition, the official Facebook page of The White House posted Obama’s tweet and added, “…we’re looking forward to your visit to the White House!” utilizing the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed that is now trending in social media worldwide.
Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year old student at MacArthur High School in north Texas was taken by local Irving Police on Monday after his teachers and school officials confused his electronic invention with a “hoax bomb”.
The teenager was detained by 5 officers and taken to a Juvenile Detention Center where he was searched, interrogated and his tablet and clock case were confiscated. He was being accused of having a “moving bomb”. The 14-year old said on a video interview to Dallas News that this “made me feel like I wasn’t human, it made feel like a criminal”.
The charges were dropped and Ahmed was released to his parents, according to police, the case is now closed.
