Taroudant – Hamid Chabat, the Secretary General of the Istiqlal party (PI), said during the meeting of the Executive Committee of his party on Friday evening that he will submit his resignation to the National Council.
“I gave this promise and I will keep it,” Chabat said.
During a TV appearance earlier this year, Chabat had already given a promise to step down if his party fails to win the municipal and regional elections, which were held on September 4, but the Secretary General didn’t honor his promise, saying “No secretary general resigns after failing in elections whose results were forged.”
However, militants of the Istiqlal Party (IP) in several cities across the Kingdom were reportedly mobilizing to end Hamid Chabat’s mandate as Secretary General of the party, following his fiasco in Fez during last Municipal and Regional Elections.
The Moroccan daily Al Akhbar has reported earlier that the departure of Hamid Chabat from “the secretariat of the party is only a matter of time,” stressing that the leaders of the party in Fez and those in the southern provinces are preparing a strong mobilization to bring him down or force him to resign.
According to the istiqlal Party’s Internal Code of Conduct, the resignation of the Secretary General has to be presented before the National Council and becomes subject to voting.
The Istiqlal Party obtained less than 1 million votes in 2015’s Municipal and Regional Elections, while the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) obtained the highest number of votes (1.5 million), followed by the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) with over 1 million votes.
