Rabat – Real Madrid have welcomed Osama Alabed Almohsen with two sons Zied and Mohammed for a tour of the club, hanging out with the team’s executives and stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo.
The three have become symbols of the Syrian refugee crisis. They made worldwide headlines last week when a Hungarian camerawoman was caught on tape tripping the father over as he ran from the police with his son Ziad in his arms.
The trio was welcome by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to the club’s stadium Santiago Bernabeu, where they visited the club’s collection of football and basketball European Cups.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Almohsen, a former first-division soccer coach in Syria, who is from the ISIS-controlled region of Deir ez-Zor.
“I love Real Madrid, they’re my favourite team and my whole family’s too. I’m very grateful for the welcome given to us by the president. In Syria we dreamed of seeing a Real Madrid match, and now that’s going to come true. I’m really happy”.
The club President also invited them to Madrid’s forthcoming home fixture against Granada and presented them each with a scarf and a cap.
Almohsen moved his family to Spain this week and will continue his career as a football coach with CENAFE in Getafe, a suburb of Madrid.
