Rabat – Mohand Laenser, the Sports and Youth Minister, has announced he is standing down from the government after he was elected president of the Fez-Meknes region.
The secretary general of the Popular Movement party (MP) has written to the head of government and tendered his resignation. The veteran politician, however, told the media that he is yet to receive a response as his request is still being processed.
Laenser was declared winner with 43 votes out 69 in the Fez-Meknes region elections. His victory was expected especially following the withdrawal of Istiqlal Party secretary general Hamid Chabat from the race to become president of the region.
As for his new role as the new president of the Fez-Meknes region, Laenser told French-speaking news website Telquel that it would be his “last political mandate”.
Born in 1942 in Imouzzer Marmoucha, Laenser served as a minister of telecommunications, agriculture, a minister of state, a minister of the interior, a minister of planning and a minister of youth and sports.
