Rabat – English, Wayne Rooney, and Dutchman, Robin van Persie, two talented players known for their top goal scoring skills, have struggled in their game since Van Gaal took over as head coach of Manchester United.
Who could be at blame for these stars’ poor performance? According to football legend Martin Keown, the reason behind Van Persie’s low performance last year and his subsequent departure from the team last summer was the Dutch coach’s management style.
Keown accuses Manchester United’s manager of “dampening down” Rooney and Van Persie’s careers.
“Once Sir Alex Ferguson left, van Persie suffered a dip and last season he looked a far cry from the player he once was,” Keown said according to the Daily Mail.
The former Arsenal star argues that Van Persie’s poor scoring performance last year was mainly due to Van Gaal’s system of instructions.
“It could be that the job he was asked to do led to a downturn in performance,” he noted.
Van Persie left Manchester United and joined Turkish giants Fenerbahce during the summer window.
According to Keown, Rooney is facing the same problems with his coach.
“And Now it looks like Rooney’s being dampened down in the same way that Van Persie was.”
“He’s stopped scoring goals and I’m not seeing that same spark in his game.”
Earlier this month, the Dutch coach came under fire after a delegation of his players revolted against his training methods. The delegation, which was led by Man United’s Captain Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, said that Van Gaal’s approach to training was too “rigid” and does not allow them to “express” themselves enough.
