Taroudant – Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei held Saudi Arabia responsible for Thursday’s deadly stampede that claimed the life of more than 717 Muslim pilgrims and more than 863 injured.
The Shite country’s supreme leader laid the blame for the deaths on “improper measures” and “mismanagement,” announcing three days of mourning to mourn about 90 Iranians who died in the tragic accident.
“The government of Saudi Arabia must accept the huge responsibility for this catastrophe,” Iran state-owned news agency IRNA quoted Khamenei as saying, demanding that the causes of the accident “should not be overlooked.”
According to Press TV, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, held the Saudi authorities responsible for the deadly incident.
“The imprudence on the part of relevant Saudi authorities to provide security for the pilgrims cannot be overlooked,” he said.
Abdollahian also accused Saudi officials of “tactlessness” concerning maintaining safety during the hajj ceremony.
“We can in no way be indifferent to this irresponsible behavior of Saudi Arabia. This will be dealt with through diplomatic channels,” he added.
However, Khaled al-Falih, Saudi Arabia’s Health Minister blamed the pilgrims for not respecting the safety “instructions,” adding that this was the “main cause of this tragedy.”
According to Aljazeera, al-Falih said, “Many pilgrims move without respecting the timetables” established by authorities, adding that this is the “principal reason for this type of accident.”
“If the pilgrims had followed instructions, this type of accident could have been avoided,” he said.
This tragedy comes only days after a huge construction crane collapsed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque, claiming the life of more than 100 people and leaving over 200 others injured.
