Rabat – A Brazilian court has accused Barcelona forward Neymar of evading taxes and froze $50 million (188.8m reais) worth of his assets as a security measure.
A tribunal in Sao Paulo on Friday claimed that the Brazilian international, 23, evaded nearly $18 million worth of taxes between 2011 and 2013, when he joined Barcelona from Santos.
A federal judge in Sao Paulo said the player “failed to report income coming from abroad” and “failed to report payments” from Barcelona.
The frozen assets belong to Neymar, his father and businesses allegedly owned by the two. However, Neymar parents told the Brazilian media that the player had not evaded taxes
Neymar reportedly makes about 275,000 euros per week. According to Forbes, the player’s earnings from salaries and endorsement deals can reach $31 million per year.
Neymar is not the first Barcelona player to be slapped with tax dodging charges. The Catalan club’s star Lionel Messi is also facing similar charges.
