Rabat – Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that new signing Anthony Martial can help Wayne Rooney puts and end to his scoring drought, according to the Express.
Wayne Rooney has gone 954 minutes without finding the back of the net. The England captain last league goal was against Aston Villa on April 4.
However, the Red Devils manager Van Gaal believes that new comer Anthony Martial has what it takes to help Rooney shine again.
“I think that Wayne can play a lot of positions – he has shown that last season. I want to play with a first striker and a second striker and maybe he and Martial can be a very good duo together. We shall wait and see,” Van Gaal said.
“I also have to wait and see if he [Rooney] can play as a second striker in this system which we now play. Rooney is a striker for me and maybe I shall use him behind Martial. But when he plays with [Marouane] Fellaini, he will always play in front of Fellaini because I want a striker who is running in behind.
“A type like Martial is very important in our philosophy. I have said many times that I want speed, I want creativity and that’s why we bought Martial and also Memphis [Depay].
Rooney has scored four times thus far in the campaign for United – a hat-trick in the Champions League against Bruges and a Capital One Cup goal against Ipswich.
