Rabat – Manchester United coach, Louis van Gaal, said on Wednesday that they were “lucky” the referee allowed them a penalty. The declaration came after his team’s 2-1victory over Wolfsburg in the Champions League.
“Sure it’s a penalty, but many referees would refrain from calling a penalty for such an action. Ever since, we began to generate more occasions. Depay and Rooney had chances to score and settle the match,” Van Gaal told BT Sports after the match.
The penalty in favor of the ‘Red Devils’ was decreed 34 minutes into the first half by the Hungarian referee, Viktor Kassai, after a pass from Spanish midfielder Juan Mata touched the hand of Daniel Caligiuri.
Mata was in charge of the penalty and leveled the match. Van Gaal’s players completed the comeback after eight minutes into the second half thanks to a goal from Chris Smalling after an excellent pass from Mata.
“They scored early and that made the match very difficult. However, I think we played very well and have generated many occasions without reaching the end,” said Van Gaal.
“At the end of the game my players were very tired but we did well because we did not let them create danger. Maybe they had a chance, but no more,” he said.
“However, we have to master and better control the ball in the second halves,” he concluded.
