Rabat – A young bride committed suicide this past week by eating rodenticides. This came after the groom accused her of not being a virgin.
Sarah, a young girl from Settat, 67KM (42 miles) away from Casablanca, married a Moroccan man living in Italy on October 4th. After the wedding ceremony, she went with her husband to Marrakech for their honeymoon. It was there that he accused her of not being a virgin.
These accusations prompted the couple to cancel the honeymoon and go back to the house of the groom’s family, where Sarah suffered even more, according to a report by Alyaoum24. The groom’s family reportedly insulted the young bride, with the groom’s sister labeling her as a “liar and cheap bi***.”
According to the same source, Sarah decided to flee the house and hid in a friend’s home nearby. Sarah’s father was alerted of his daughter’s disappearance, prompting him to report her as missing to the police.
A few days later, Sarah’s father received a call from his daughter’s friend, telling him that his daughter ate rodenticides and died in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the father believes that his daughter did not commit suicide, alleging that she died of abuse by her husband. Alyaoum24 states that he has filed a lawsuit against the groom, accusing him of beating and abusing Sarah.
However, autopsy of the body revealed that she died from the rat poison. No trace of abuse was found on her body.
In Morocco and other Muslim countries, a girl must preserve her virginity intact until her first marriage under all circumstances. A woman should not lose her virginity to anyone but her husband.
This has, in turn, created a demand among cosmetic surgeons for hymen replacements, which, if done properly, they say, will not be detected and will produce tell-tale vaginal bleeding on the wedding night. However, no reliable statistics on hymen replacements are available because the procedure is mostly done in private clinics.
