Rabat – A group of eight Moroccan policemen have been arrested in Casablanca for allegedly torturing to death a prisoner in custody last August, Moroccan media reported on Monday.
The policemen were arrested on Saturday, following an order by the state prosecutor in Casablanca to detain them, according to a report by daily Assabah newspaper.
The eight policemen are accused of torturing a person, with the use of violence leading to his death, according to the same source.
The victim, who was arrested earlier in August while under the influence of narcotics, was taken from his cell to a public hospital in Casablanca where he died.
Casablanca Police had said in a statement then that the victim died of a self-inflicted head injury when he hit his head against the gate of the police station.
However, an autopsy showed that the death was due to the injuries he suffered in detention, which prompted Casablanca’s central police authority to investigate the victim’s death.
