Director of Morocco’s intelligence services – General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) and General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) – Abdellatif Hammouchi called for the mobilization of all Moroccan security services and raised the country’s security alert level.
Hammouchi met with all branches of national security following the police raid in Saint-Denis, northern Paris, on November 18 that resulted in the death of three terrorists, including the alleged mastermind of the November 13 Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud.
“Hammouchi placed security services on high alert after Saint-Denis anti-terrorist operation”, Moroccan daily Al-Massae reported in its weekend issue.
“Strict orders were issued by the DGSN to various security services on Thursday, November 19, in order to raise the security alert to its highest level,” where all security personnel is to be armed and ready at all times.
“The alert was decided to ward off any attack likely to come from ISIS sympathizers, especially after Moroccan intelligence services succeeded to decipher the enigma of Paris bombings and provided their French counterparts with valuable information that enabled them to abort new attacks that targeted at La Défense and the business district in Paris,” the daily said.
Several arrests have been made in Morocco of suspects linked to the so-called Islamic State. A French national was detained in Marrakech on Thursday and police investigate possible terrorist cells in Béni Mellal and Nador.
According to the same source, the national security mobilization is prepared to thwart any act of terrorism aimed at Morocco.
Armed unites of “Hadar” have been dispatched to protect the Kingdom’s most vulnerable and possibly targeted areas, including state institutions, public places, and tourism areas.
Moroccan intelligence services played a central role in preventing another terrorist attack in the French capital.
On Wednesday, based on the information provided by Moroccan intelligence services, French authorities were able to locate the whereabouts of Abdelhamid Abaaoud, alleged mastermind of the Paris terrorist attacks.
In a meeting on Friday in Paris, French President Francois Hollande thanked King Mohammed VI for Morocco’s effective assistance following last Friday’s carnage.
