Taroudante – Belgium’s crisis center has raised the threat level for Brussels to “level four”, meaning an attack is likely “severe and very close”, after Belgian intelligence received threats of an attack “like the one that happened in Paris”.
According to Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, the decision was made based on information about the risk of a planned Paris-style ISIS attack in the capital.
“Several individuals with arms and explosives could launch an attack… perhaps even in several places,” he said.
“In addition to measures already in place, specific measures were recommended based on these three axes. The aim is to ensure the safety of the population,” the statement of Belgium’s crisis center said.
Security measures have put Brussels into security lockdown.
The metro is closed until Sunday “by order of the police,” and the crisis center is urging people to avoid crowds, including shopping malls and concerts.
Authorities have also recommended the cancelation of large events, including football matches.
According to the Prime Minister, the threat level will remain high in Brussels until Sunday afternoon, adding that everything is under control.
Some of the suspected Paris attackers who killed 130 people last week are reportedly from Belgium.
One of the attackers who blew himself up outside the Stade de France lived in Belgium, and the alleged mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who was killed in a raid near Paris Wednesday, grew up in the impoverished Molenbeek neighborhood of Brussels.
