Rabat -Over 55 percent of convicted pedophiles in Morocco in 2015 were relatives of the victims, a new report revealed.
The figures were disclosed on Tuesday by La Coalition contre les actes pedophiles (the Moroccan Coalition Against Child Abuse) in its annual reports on pedophilia in Morocco.
Three children are sexually abused every day in Morocco, according to a report whose findings were published on the Moroccan daily Assabah.
The report revealed that the estimated number of reported child abuse cases in 2015 reached 935, an increase of 10 percent compared to 2014 (850 cases).
“635 of the total pedophilia victims in 2015 were male victims,” Khalid Cherkapoui, President of the coalition told Assabah.
He added that most of the court rulings against the convicted pedophiles in 2015 received light court rulings, although crimes of solicitation in minors and their sexual abuse are punishable with a maximum sentence of 30 years in jail under the Moroccan Penal Code.
“Most of court rulings against convicted pedophiles were between one year and four years in jail… Some pedophiles were even released, due to lack of evidences,” Cherkaoui concluded.
Overall, the report revealed that more than 3,266 reported child sexual abuse incidents were recorded between 2015 and 2015, adding the number of pedophilia acts is dramatically increasing.
Children between 5 and 14 years old are the particular targets of pedophiles, the report warned
