New York – French National Front member, Marion Meréchal-Le Pen said on Tuesday that Muslims cannot be French “unless they comply with France’s customs and way of life” which she describes as Christian.
According to the young far-right politician, the French royal power has held an alliance with the Catholic Church for centuries, which demonstrates that France “can only be Christian.”
“Those who did not celebrate the coronation of [the kings of France at] Reims [Cathedral] and the Festival of the Federation are not really French,” the MP of Vaucluse stressed at a rally in Touloun.
“We are not a land of Islam, and the French can be Muslims, provided that they comply with the France’s customs and lifestyle, with Greco-Roman influence, and shaped by sixteen centuries of Christianity”, she said.
“In France, we do not wear djellaba, we do not live in full veil and do not need cathedral mosques,” she added.
According to the HuffPost, last November, during an interview with the far-right Catholic daily Present, Le-Pen said that Muslims “cannot have the same exact rank as Catholics” in France.
“We must accept to define and claim what is our heritage and what is our identity. That is through the affirmation of our Greco-Roman and Christian heritage. It must be said that France is a country culturally and spiritually Christian for a very long time,” Le Pen said.
According to Le Pen, Islam traditions cannot be practiced in public contrary to those of Christianity, which can be shared in public. “There is no phenomenon of Islamophobia in France,” she said, saying that this is “kind of a culture of excuses”.
