Rabat – A man spent seven hours at the top of a telephone pole in Marrakech yesterday, threatening to commit suicide in order to get the attention of his desired sweetheart.
The confused act of romance began at ten o’clock in the morning, when the man, named “Mourad,” made the 30-meter climb up a telephone pole in the busy Gueliz area in central Marrakech.
“Khadija and a pack of cigarettes” were his demands to the large crowd of onlookers below, including police, paramedics, fire-fighters and many members of the general public. All stood looking on in bemused anticipation of the bizarre stunt’s outcome.
In an interview with TV channel 2M, one of Mourad’s close friends reiterated his desires: “He wants Khadija. He’s asking us to bring Khadija, asks the police to bring him Khadija.”
While it is not clear what made him consider this to be the best strategy, the boy’s mother blamed drugs for his actions. “He never had drugs or smoked, and now all he asks is to bring him drugs,” she insisted, “Our youth are lost because of this.”
The incident created a buzz on social media, with many calling him “Spiderman” and “Romeo of Marrakech.” Finally, at around five o’clock in the afternoon, as the light was dimming, his demands were met. The emergence of Khadija from the crowd armed with a bouquet of flowers brought the young man down, who was then escorted away by authorities for questioning.
