Rabat – Moroccan authorities denied the allegations widely reported by Israeli media in recent days that King Mohammed VI had allegedly dispatched a Moroccan Jewish negotiator to Israel with the intention to mediate efforts to resume the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
Morocco is “greatly surprised” by statements on an alleged Moroccan mediation to resume Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, Delegate Minister to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mbarka Bouaida said on Wednesday, according to Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).
Morocco has always supported any initiative that aims to contribute to settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but “we are greatly surprised by statements on an alleged mediation of the Kingdom to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks,” she was quoted by MAP as saying.
Bouaida recalled that the so-called Sam Benchetrit, an Israeli of Moroccan origin, who is also who the founder and chairman of the World Federation of Moroccan Jew, had talked about an alleged mediation, which the Kingdom “is not aware” of.
“Benchetrit has undertaken this initiative in a strictly personal capacity, he has never been mandated by any Moroccan authority and, therefore, he cannot claim any legitimacy to act on behalf of Morocco,” she said.
