Rabat – An organization representing Moroccans attempting to conceive a child urged the government to establish a National Day of Fertility in order to spread awareness on how important fertility is for the continuation of a society and the health complications that lead to infertility.
According to a statement recently released by the Organization of Dreamers of Motherhood and Fatherhood, setting a day – specifically the 15th of May – apart to talk about low fertility will help bring the topic in the public sphere and remind citizens about the existence of many Moroccan couples who have not been able to conceive a child despite efforts.
The group said May 15th would be a good day for the annual event because it coincides with World Family Day – an annual celebration that holds a lot of weight amongst those unable to produce children.
Once the date is approved, the organization will also design a campaign to spread awareness about the causes of infertility and raise funds to move forward treatment-related research.
The campaign will also help Moroccans understand how aging decreases fertility and teach scientific ways to decrease the effects of growing older on the reproductive system.
The organization hopes that Morocco will become one of the countries that require health plans for workers and families to cover infertility as a health problem that needs treatment, as the World Health Organization said of the disease in 2009.
