Rabat – The city of Agadir will host its fourth annual International Green Marathon on Sunday, 24 April under the motto “let’s run for the environment.”
The organizing committee held a press conference on 6 April in order to promote the event and provide information about this year’s marathon activities. Organizers anticipate that over 10,000 runners will participate.
Agadir’s International Green Marathon is considered the first eco-friendly marathon in Africa.
Marathon organizers aim to plant 3,000 trees on Saturday, 23 April, ahead of the event, under the direct supervision of the governor of the Souss-Massa region and the Agadir Municipal Council, in cooperation with the regional High Commission of Planning for Water and Forests.
According to Abdelwahed Soulami Rahal, the chairman of the organizing committee, the event aims to spread awareness among the citizens of Agadir and the participants of the marathon, who come from around the world, about the importance of caring for the environment.
Mohammed Bakiri, the vice president of the Agadir Municipal Council announced that the Council would allocate MAD 300,000 in financial aid to the Regional Council of Tourism in Agadir and Souss-Massa to support artistic, recreational and sports activities in the city.
Local authorities will ensure that Agadir’s streets remain free of cars during the event.
In 2015, the third annual International Green Marathon in Agadir was a success, with over 30,500 participants.
