Rabat – Morocco’s police foiled a dangerous terrorist plot following the arrest on Friday in Tangier of an ISIS affiliated Chadian national, the Interior ministry said.
The man, who arrived in Morocco on May 4 via Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca from Chad, was appointed by ISIS to train and set up sleeper cells made of Algerian and Moroccan extremists with the aim of carrying out terrorist attacks against Western diplomatic missions and tourist sites and undermining Morocco’s security and stability, the ministry added in a statement.
As part of this terrorist plot, the Chadian national scouted potential targets in order to prepare a series of attacks to cause massive damage alike the bloody events that occurred in Casablanca on May 16, 2003, the source pointed out.
According to preliminary investigations, the man intended to proclaim the eastern region of the Kingdom as an ISIS-linked Emirate.
Successive proactive operations led by Moroccan security services against terrorist networks helped thwart several terrorist plots both in Morocco and abroad, the statement said.
The suspect will be brought to justice at the end of the investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.
