Rabat – Morocco is committed for several years to implementing an ambitious proactive vision of sustainable development aimed at limiting the effects of climate change, said Thursday in Rabat chairman of the COP22 steering committee, Salaheddine Mezouar.
“Morocco’s commitments were announced by HM the King at the COP21. This commitment and determination towards sustainable development make of Morocco a credible hub for the COP22, an event of great importance,” Mezouar said at the opening of the plenary session of the first Alliances and Coalitions Global Forum.
Mezouar reiterated Morocco’s determination and will to make of the COP22, to be held in November in Marrakech, a Summit of action to achieve the commitments made under the Paris agreement.
“Our ambition is to speed up this momentum through a voluntary, strong and sustained action,” as part of efforts to tackle climate change, he noted, calling on alliances and coalitions to step up efforts and play a major role to achieve the desired objectives.
“Today, the climate action no longer involves States, but all actors of different kinds, the private sector, the financial world, cities, regions and civil societies,” said Mezouar, noting that this approach of openness was strongly strengthened during the COP21 and further consolidated by the Moroccan presidency of COP22.
The first Global Forum of Alliances and Coalitions kicked off on Thursday in Rabat. The two-day event gathers about 300 participants, including leaders, policy-makers, economic operators, experts and civil society representatives committed to climate action.
Participants will discuss the means to strengthen voluntary initiatives to accelerate the trajectory from 2°C to 1.5°C.
The forum’s goal is to lay the foundations for the organization of the High-Level Event on Climate Action, planned for COP22 in Marrakech.
The event will also be an occasion to strengthen the coordination of climate action among alliances and coalitions and to encourage the emergence of new voluntary initiatives.
